I love looking back at my recipes and thinking of new things I can make. I get lots of people asking me for early weaning recipes and I admit, as my kids are way beyond that stage (and I did a lot of BLW style things for Little Lady), I am a bit out of practice wth purees. However I had lots of fun the other day making up two yummy puree recipes that are perfect for babies who are just starting or are established on protein. They are a complete meal in themselves as they have protein, carbs and veg so no need to serve with anything else.
Both these recipes take less than 20 minutes to cook from start to finish and make about 10 tablespoons of the mixture. You know your baby’s appetite so you can decide how many portions this will make.
Baby’s first roast chicken dinner
50g skinless and boneless chicken (or turkey) – chopped into little pieces
25g carrot – peeled and diced or sliced into small pieces
25g onion – diced
75g potato (or sweet potato) – peeled and diced
In a pan of boiling water put the potato, carrots and onion. Leave it to simmer for about 10-12 minute until the vegetables are nice and soft. Meanwhile either cook the chicken by poaching it in some water for about 10 minutes or cooking it in the oven on 180 degrees C for about 15 minutes. Once everything is cooked put it all into one bowl or a food processor with some of the cooking liquid from the vegetables and blitz it to the texture that you desire. You can add more liquid to it as needed to make the texture how you want it.
Baby’s first fish pie
50g skinless and boneless salmon or cod – flaked
50g courgette – diced
25g broccoli – chopped into small pieces
75g potato – peeled and diced
25g grated cheese
Put the potato, courgette and broccoli into a pan of boiling water. Leave it to simmer for about 10-12 minutes until the vegetables are nice and soft.
Meanwhile either cook the salmon by poaching it in some milk in the microwave for about 5 minutes or cooking it in the oven on 180 degrees C for about 15 minutes.
As above, once everything is cooked put it all into one bowl or a food processor with some of the cooking liquid from the vegetables and blitz it to the texture that you desire. Add the cheese and stir it until it’s melted. You can add more liquid to it as needed to make the texture how you want it.
Options:
- You can also add some milk (formula, breast or cow’s milk) or grated cheese if you wanted to up your baby’s calcium intake
- Instead of cooking the veg in water you can also add in a baby stock cube to increase the flavour
- Both these freeze nicely either in weaning trays or little pots. To defrost leave them in the fridge overnight or on the side for a few hours then reheat in a pan or in the microwave. You may need to add in some extra liquid (water or milk) as they may dry out a bit from reheating. Remember once defrosted they cannot be frozen again and can only be reheated once.
